Nutrition

The key to a balanced diet:

Our efforts are aimed at supplementing our members' basic rice-and-beans diet, the diet of the poor. All other foods are more costly and therefore out of reach, especially since nearly 80% of their income goes into food purchases.

Every Sunday each family receives a $5 package of fresh vegetables and eggs purchased from the local farmer's market.  The Friends pay half of the cost.

The veggies include tomatoes, peppers, onions, cucumbers, beets, carrots, cabbage, and pumpkins.  By buying everything in bulk as well as in-season, the weekly $100 is stretched significantly.

In addition, each family receives $5 per quarter for planting a vegetable garden in their yard.  The results of this Home Garden Program have been very encouraging.
